Main trade-off
Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 8
External bass and rear speakers cost extra.
Head-to-head
Choose Q990F if you want a complete surround purchase with a subwoofer and rear speakers. Choose Sony Bar 8 if the room currently suits one bar and you want to select extra speakers later. Bar 8 is narrower, but it includes fewer components and only one HDMI source input.
Before you choose
Sony’s 43.31-inch width is 5.19 inches below Samsung’s 48.5-inch width.
What this is based on
Divide the 5.19-inch gap by 48.5 to get about 10.7%. On a 46-inch usable stand, only Sony meets the cabinet-width limit.
Main trade-off
External bass and rear speakers cost extra.
Main trade-off
Both rear speakers still need electrical power.
Bar 8 or Q990F? Compare included speakers, cabinet space and HDMI source count before choosing a standalone bar or a complete surround package.
A lower box count is a placement advantage, not an equivalent surround package at a lower price.
Winner by situation
Check side-driver clearance as well as cabinet width.
Sony has one direct source input.
The Samsung rears would be difficult to use.
Sony requires separately chosen accessories.
What matters in practice
Sony’s 43.31-inch width is 5.19 inches below Samsung’s 48.5-inch width.
Divide the 5.19-inch gap by 48.5 to get about 10.7%. On a 46-inch usable stand, only Sony meets the cabinet-width limit.
Samsung can take two direct 4K 120 Hz sources, while Sony can take one.
With Sony, the second source must use a suitable TV input or another switching arrangement. The TV still needs to pass the required audio back to the bar.
Q990F adds a subwoofer and two rear units to the bar.
Sony Bar 8 alone avoids those placement decisions, but it also lacks those physical speakers. Do not describe the two purchases as equivalent merely because both decode Atmos.
Try your real numbers
Measure the clear space in front of your TV. Count devices you want to plug into the soundbar, not devices already connected to the TV. The numbers below are examples until you enter yours.
43.31 inches wide and 2.52 inches high, with 1 separate HDMI source input. It leaves 4.7 inches of total spare width.
It needs 48.5 inches of width, more than your 48 inches.
Use an open top surface, not an enclosed cubby. Detachable speakers are counted in the docked width. Allow extra depth for cables and the TV stand. This checks physical dimensions and port counts, not Dolby Atmos, 4K/120Hz passthrough or your TV’s audio-format support.
Sony, HT-A8000
The Bar 8 keeps the Bar 9 connection options in a cabinet almost eight inches narrower. It is the more practical Sony starting point when the TV stand is tight, provided you allow for the cost of any later subwoofer and rears.
Samsung, HW-Q990F/ZA
The Q990F puts the subwoofer and two rear speakers in the same box and accepts two 4K 120 Hz sources directly. Choose it when you have rear-speaker locations ready, not just space beneath the TV.
