Best for this need

Which soundbar should you buy for an optical-only TV?

Our pick

Sonos Ray

Sonos Ray

Choose Sonos Ray for a small optical-only setup when Wi-Fi music and its simple connection are enough. Choose Beam Gen 2 if you want the option to move to HDMI ARC or eARC with a future TV. Choose Polk MagniFi Mini AX when the stand is especially narrow and you have room for its supplied subwoofer.

Why it fits this need

  • Native optical input or the required included adapter
  • A compatible everyday volume-control method
Main trade-off
No HDMI connection, Dolby Atmos or Bluetooth music playback.
Choose Sonos Beam (Gen 2) instead when
You expect to use HDMI ARC or eARC later. Its optical adapter is included for the current TV.
More reasons behind this pick
  • Realistic expectations for the audio formats optical carries

Choose a soundbar for an optical-only TV by connector, remote control and size. Understand the format limit before paying for features optical cannot carry.

What matters in practice

How to choose for this need

Choose for the optical connection you will actually use. Optical does not carry Dolby Atmos, regardless of the logo on the soundbar.

01

An HDMI socket is not automatically an ARC connection

Some older TVs have HDMI inputs but no audio-return capability. A soundbar’s eARC TV socket does not accept ordinary video-input behavior in reverse. Check the TV’s labels and manual. An optical-only TV cannot connect directly to Sennheiser AMBEO Mini because that bar has no optical input.

02

Remote control is part of the purchase

Sonos Ray uses compatible infrared commands for TV volume control rather than HDMI-CEC. A remote that mainly uses Bluetooth or radio may need an infrared setup option. Check the actual remote used in the household so basic volume control does not become the surprise after delivery.

03

Future flexibility can justify Beam, but not imaginary Atmos today

Beam Gen 2 includes an optical adapter and can later use HDMI ARC or eARC. Ray remains optical-only. On the current optical connection, Beam’s HDMI capabilities wait for a compatible TV. Adding a subwoofer or rear speakers does not remove the input-format limit.

Worked example

A 24-inch shelf and an optical-only TV

Apply the physical width and connection requirements together.

FormulaA candidate must have an optical connection path and a cabinet no wider than 24 inches.

  • The TV has optical audio but no ARC or eARC.
  • The shelf has 24 inches of usable width.
  • Subwoofer floor space and screen clearance are checked separately.

Polk MagniFi Mini AX14.40 inNativeFits, with separate subwoofer
Sennheiser AMBEO Mini27.56 inNoneNo direct optical connection

What that meansRay keeps this example to one cabinet. Polk fits the shelf even more easily but needs a separate subwoofer location.

Keep in mindThis table does not guarantee every TV output format or remote will work. Check the actual TV and remote models.

Check these before buying

  • Confirm the TV has a working optical output and the expected output settings.
  • Check remote-control compatibility before ordering.
  • Check whether an optical cable or adapter is included in the exact package.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • Supported optical formats vary by TV output settings and soundbar. No optical setup here is represented as a Dolby Atmos connection.

Our pick and alternatives

01
Sonos Ray

Sonos, Ray

Sonos Ray

The Ray makes sense for a small TV with optical audio when you also want Sonos music streaming. It keeps the TV connection simple, but it cannot become an Atmos soundbar through a software setting or a new cable.

Winner whenAn optical-only TV on a narrow stand

Decisive facts

  • Cabinet measures 21.93 × 2.76 × 3.66 inches.
  • Optical TV input, with no HDMI input or output.

Trade-off

No HDMI connection, Dolby Atmos or Bluetooth music playback.

02
Sonos Beam (Gen 2)

Sonos, Beam Gen 2

Sonos Beam (Gen 2)

The Beam fits a narrow TV stand and keeps a path open to a larger Sonos system. Its Atmos presentation uses processing rather than upward-firing drivers, and room tuning needs a compatible iPhone or iPad.

Choose instead whenYou expect to use HDMI ARC or eARC later. Its optical adapter is included for the current TV.

Decisive facts

  • Cabinet measures 25.63 × 2.68 × 3.94 inches.
  • HDMI eARC or ARC connection and an included optical adapter.

Trade-off

No separate HDMI source inputs and no Bluetooth music playback.

03
Polk MagniFi Mini AX

Polk Audio, MagniFi Mini AX

Polk MagniFi Mini AX

The Mini AX is the smallest bar here by width, making it useful between closely spaced TV feet. The included subwoofer moves part of the system onto the floor, so the tiny bar does not mean a one-box setup.

Choose instead whenThe available bar width is very narrow and you can place a separate subwoofer.

Decisive facts

  • Bar measures 14.4 × 3.1 × 4.1 inches.
  • Subwoofer cabinet measures 7.2 × 14.6 × 15.6 inches.

Trade-off

A separate subwoofer still needs floor space and electrical power.

04
Sony HT-S2000

Sony, HT-S2000

Sony HT-S2000

The HT-S2000 fits a 32-inch-wide space and does not require a separate bass box. It accepts eARC or optical audio, but its Atmos height effect is virtual and it cannot take a console directly.

Choose instead whenYou want built-in bass in a 31.5-inch bar and Bluetooth music rather than Wi-Fi streaming.

Decisive facts

  • Bar measures 800 × 64 × 124 mm.
  • 3.1-channel bar with built-in bass drivers.

Trade-off

No HDMI source inputs or Wi-Fi music streaming.
