Main trade-off
Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II
F4 needs more light or ISO at a given shutter speed. OSS cannot freeze a moving performer.
Head-to-head
Choose F4 Macro II for daylight reach, close details and a smaller bag. Choose F2.8 GM II for moving subjects in dim light when the extra stop is usable. F4 saves 251 g on the same tripod-mount-excluded basis and is 51 mm shorter in its listed configuration. It also reaches 0.5x throughout the zoom. Both have OSS and the same listed Sony converter options.
Before you choose
The F4 lens reaches 0.5x at every focal length, compared with the GM II’s 0.3x maximum. At those maxima, the F4 reproduces an object about 1.67 times larger linearly on the sensor. A parent alternating between a child at a distance and a small nature detail can keep the same lens mounted. This does not establish more working distance or better macro sharpness. It identifies a useful combination of reach and reproduction that the brighter lens’s aperture advantage does not replace.
What this is based on
Outdoor family outing plus small nature/craft details crossed with shared tele range and maximum reproduction. 0.5/0.3 is about 1.67, maxima not matched optical testing.

Main trade-off
Larger carrying package and a lower 0.3x maximum close-up ratio.
Sony 70-200 F4 II vs F2.8 GM II for outdoor children, indoor performances and close nature details. Compare the one-stop trade and the complete bag.
These current Sony 70-200 zooms serve the same telephoto buyer and share OSS plus supported converters. The F4 Macro II is a credible smaller alternative to the F2.8 GM II, with a real close-detail capability rather than only a lower aperture tier.
Winner by situation
F4 combines 200 mm with 0.5x throughout the range.
F2.8 adds one nominal stop.
F4 reduces same-basis size and mass without losing the listed converter path.
Both include OSS. No measured stabilization winner is claimed.

For a moving performer, F2.8 can permit roughly twice the shutter speed of F4 at the same ISO and light, before transmission differences. That can be worth more than the smaller lens and stronger close-up ratio. Both have OSS, but stabilization addresses camera movement rather than freezing the subject. If the group on stage needs stopping down for depth, part of the F2.8 benefit may be unused. Choose around the actual light, movement and distances at the recurring event.
Indoor performance plus subject movement and group depth crossed with one nominal stop and shared OSS. No exact shutter or keeper-rate promise.
Sony lists the same 1.4x and 2x converters for both lenses. Choosing F4 therefore does not remove the documented future reach path, though it starts with one stop less maximum light and the converter takes more. The F4 is 251 g lighter and 51 mm shorter on the stated comparable lens basis. Add the actual tripod mount, converter and camera before planning the bag. A compact base lens does not make the completed long-reach setup equally bright or equally capable on every body.
Day bag plus occasional longer reach crossed with shared converter compatibility, aperture starting point and comparable weight/length. No converter autofocus guarantee.

What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II. The compact half-macro combination is useful.
Choose Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II. The extra stop is the relevant upgrade.
What matters in practice
The smaller telephoto can do the close nature detail the brighter lens cannot frame as large, while the evening performance rewards the extra stop.
