Main trade-off
Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G
F4 gives up a nominal stop to F2.8. A wider frame does not rescue subject movement at an unsuitable shutter speed.
Head-to-head
Sony gives you room to frame a group when you cannot step back. Tamron gives moving people a nominal one-stop aperture advantage when you can use F2.8. An existing wide lens or a need to stop down to F4 can reverse the choice, so include the lenses and filters you will actually carry.
Before you choose
At a birthday table or in a narrow street, stepping back may be impossible. Sony’s 20 mm end covers about 40% more width than 28 mm from the same position under a distant-plane approximation. That can keep the group in one frame without reaching for another lens. The advantage shrinks if a wide lens already travels with you or if moving back is easy. Keep faces away from the frame edges and choose enough depth of field. Wider coverage alone does not promise a flattering group picture.
What this is based on
Calculated width ratio 28 / 20 = 1.4, holding sensor and camera position fixed. This is a framing approximation, not a distortion or close-focus test.

Main trade-off
The 28 mm wide end may leave people or architecture outside the frame when there is no room to move back.
Sony 20-70 F4 vs Tamron 28-75 G2 for family groups and evening movement. Check room width, usable aperture and the filters already in your travel kit.
These are plausible everyday zooms for the same Sony full-frame camera. The useful question is what usually stops the picture: the wall behind you, movement in evening light, or a kit that needs another accessory before leaving home.
Winner by situation
Sony adds 20–27 mm coverage. Check faces near the edges and the depth of field needed for the group.
Tamron adds nominal exposure headroom. Neither aperture guarantees a sharp moving subject.
Tamron reuses the native filter size and the second lens already handles the missing wide view. Include both lenses in the carry calculation.
Stopping both lenses to F4 removes the maximum-aperture difference for that shot. Sony retains its wider framing.

If the room already fits at 28 mm, Tamron’s F2.8 can be the useful difference when children keep moving after sunset. The nominal stop relative to F4 can exchange an exposure around 1/125 second for roughly 1/250 at the same ISO and light, before transmission differences. That still does not guarantee frozen movement. A group arranged in several rows may need F4 or smaller for depth of field, removing this particular advantage. Decide from the subjects and aperture you will actually use, rather than counting every indoor picture as an F2.8 win.
Nominal aperture and exposure relationship. The shutter example is illustrative, with no matched autofocus, transmission or motion-success test.
A traveler with a working 67 mm polarizer or ND filter can put it directly on the Tamron. Choosing Sony means arranging a 72 mm filter or a separately checked larger-filter setup, then checking the cap, hood and bag together. Otherwise the new lens may be ready for today’s walk while tomorrow’s water or video outing still needs another purchase. Sony is only 52 g lighter as a lens. If its wider end lets another lens stay home, that separate packing change matters more, but it must come from your actual bag rather than an assumed second lens.

Sony, SEL2070G
Choose Sony when the family or room will not fit at 28 mm and you want to keep one lens mounted.
Tamron, AFA063S700
Choose Tamron when moving people in evening light make F2.8 useful and 28 mm is wide enough from your usual position.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G | Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 G2 for Sony E | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| A group against the opposite wall | 20–70 mm on full frame. | 28–75 mm on full frame. | At the same position, 20 mm covers about 40% more distant-plane width than 28 mm. Moving back, changing the sensor crop or working very close changes the comparison. |
| People moving in evening light | Constant F4. | Constant F2.8. | F2.8 offers a nominal stop for shutter speed or ISO when depth of field permits. It is not a measured transmission or autofocus advantage. |
| Filters ready for tomorrow | 72 mm filter thread. | 67 mm filter thread. | An owned 67 mm filter fits the Tamron thread directly. A larger-filter and adapter-ring plan needs its own cap, hood and wide-end checks. |
| What goes in the daily bag | 488 g and 99 mm published lens length. | 540 g and 117.6 mm for Sony E. | Sony saves 52 g of lens mass. Include the body, any extra wide lens and accessories before treating this as a lighter complete outing. |
| Small travel details | Listed maximum magnification 0.39x. | Maximum 1:2.7 at 28 mm, with 4.4 cm front working distance. At 75 mm, maximum is 1:4.1. | Tamron’s short minimum focus distance does not by itself mean a larger subject in the image. Neither maximum applies throughout its zoom range. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G. Sony supplies the missing framing range without a lens change.
Choose Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 G2 for Sony E. Tamron’s nominal extra stop becomes useful. Check the actual shutter speed and required depth of field.
Choose Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 G2 for Sony E. Tamron accepts that native diameter. Check the particular filter and hood rather than assuming every stacked combination works.
What matters in practice
Choose the Sony when 20 mm prevents a missed group or room shot. Choose the Tamron when F2.8 or an existing 67 mm filter kit solves the more frequent problem.
