Main trade-off
Klipsch R-40PM
The smaller cabinet is not established here as equal in output or bass to R-50PM.
Head-to-head
Choose R-40PM for a desk where a monitor and two speakers already compete for width. R-40PM saves 2.6 inches of combined cabinet width. Choose R-50PM when the larger 5.25-inch platform fits and you want to audition that step up. Both provide USB audio, optical and switchable phono/line. Neither adds HDMI TV control or a second RCA input, so those needs should not be used to justify the larger purchase.
Before you choose
Moving to R-50PM adds 1.3 inches of width and 2.2 inches of height per cabinet, versus 0.7 inch of depth. With a monitor between the speakers, the total body-width increase is 2.6 inches. Under a fixed shelf, the height increase may reject the upgrade first. These are cabinet differences, not complete installation allowances. Neither should be wedged into an opening without the required ventilation and stable support.
What this is based on
7 − 5.7 = 1.3 inches. 14 − 11.8 = 2.2 inches. 10.8 − 10.1 = 0.7 inch. Pair width difference is 2 × 1.3.

Main trade-off
R-50PM is larger while keeping the same HDMI and shared-RCA limitations.

R-40PM vs R-50PM for a desk, turntable or TV. Check the space the larger pair takes and the connection problems that neither powered model fixes.
These adjacent powered Reference models share their source connections. The meaningful choice is whether the larger cabinet belongs in the available work and listening space.
Winner by situation
R-40PM saves 2.6 inches across the two cabinet widths.
Neither model has HDMI ARC.
Both provide USB audio.
Fit alone does not establish a sound winner. Audition if that is the deciding factor.

If the complaint is that other household members want one familiar TV remote, changing from R-40PM to R-50PM does not add HDMI ARC. Both receive optical audio, but that connection does not carry HDMI CEC commands. Check the actual TV and remote arrangement. A model with verified HDMI control may be the more relevant alternative than a larger version of the same optical setup.
Identical optical-without-HDMI input design crossed with a shared-household control requirement. No claim that all optical remote arrangements are impossible.
A compatible MM turntable can use either model’s phono setting. That occupies the shared RCA pair. An analog-only CD player then needs the auxiliary input with an appropriate cable, an external switch or another available output such as optical. The larger R-50PM does not provide a second RCA pair. Count the outputs on the actual players before choosing a speaker size to solve an input-count problem.
Shared phono/line RCA plus separate auxiliary and optical crossed with two specified analog sources.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Klipsch R-40PM | Klipsch R-50PM | Why it matters |

| Height and depth | 11.8 H by 10.1 D inches | 14 H by 10.8 D inches | Height grows more than depth, which matters below a fixed shelf. |
| TV | Optical input, no HDMI | Optical input, no HDMI | The larger model does not unlock HDMI ARC control. |
| Records and other analog sources | Shared RCA phono/line plus auxiliary | Shared RCA phono/line plus auxiliary | Two RCA sources still need another connection strategy. |
| Computer and link | USB audio and supplied 4 m speaker wire | USB audio and supplied 4 m speaker wire | Both cover the direct computer job and need the same basic wired layout. |
