Head-to-head

EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus vs Jackery Explorer 500 v2: RIVER grows with extra batteries, Jackery starts with more reserve

The short answer

RIVER 3 Plus wins for a desk or router because its sub-10ms transfer, app tools and stack-on batteries make it much more configurable. Explorer 500 v2 is better when a quiet, simple 512Wh box is preferable to buying an expansion battery.

The reasoning and the trade-offs

Main trade-off

EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus

Only one USB-C port is built into the base unit, and the small battery limits high-draw runtime.

Main trade-off

Jackery Explorer 500 v2

The 500W ceiling excludes many kitchen appliances and corded tools, and there is no expansion-battery port.

About this comparison

Choose modular UPS features or nearly twice the base battery capacity.

The practical choice turns on base capacity and rated output, then on the constraints in your own setup.

Before you choose

How they fit your plans

A four-hour work session favors the larger base battery

If your laptop and router average 80W together, Explorer 500 v2 is the better standalone choice for a four-hour session. Our allowance gives it about 5.1 hours, compared with 2.9 hours for the base RIVER 3 Plus. EcoFlow's expansion route is useful when you intend to buy it, but an optional battery should not be counted as energy already in the box.

Facts behind this advice

Example load is 65W for a laptop plus 15W for a router. Capacity × 0.8 ÷ 80W gives 2.86 hours from 286Wh and 5.12 hours from 512Wh. These are estimates with no recharge. Measure actual demand and allow for inverter overhead, battery age and conditions.

A lighting kit can reverse the choice

A continuous 500W lighting setup plus an 80W desk totals 580W. RIVER 3 Plus is the only one of these two within its normal rated AC limit for that example. Jackery's 1000W peak figure does not make it a 580W continuous supply. Choose EcoFlow when the simultaneous load is the constraint, and keep the session short or arrange a recharge.

Facts behind this advice

580W is below RIVER 3 Plus's 600W rating and above Explorer 500 v2's 500W rating. At that steady load, the base EcoFlow planning reserve is about 24 minutes using 286Wh × 0.8 ÷ 580W. Check light-driver startup demand. Voltage-reducing boost modes are excluded.

Winner by situation

Start with what you need it to do

  • I want automatic backup for a computer or router

It has a documented 20ms-or-faster transfer mode. That is not the same as a certified medical or double-conversion UPS.

  • I may add battery capacity later

For base capacity, EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus records “286Wh” and Jackery Explorer 500 v2 records “512Wh”. This changes how much stored energy is available before expansion batteries or recharging enter the plan.

  • I need quiet overnight power for CPAP

For rated output, EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus records “600W” and Jackery Explorer 500 v2 records “500W”. The published output matters only when the room, surface or workload needs the extra headroom. It does not prove better results by itself.

What you give up

Every choice has a cost

If you choose EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus

  • X-Boost may lower voltage for compatible heating loads. It is not appropriate for voltage-sensitive electronics.

If you choose Jackery Explorer 500 v2

  • The verified US Amazon identity is currently a carrying-bag bundle. Jackery’s standalone US option was unavailable when reviewed, so compare bundle contents and seller before ordering.
