Head-to-head

Panasonic GH7 vs Fujifilm X-H2: GH7 slows action in 4K, X-H2 leaves more room across an 8K scene

The short answer

GH7 records 4K120, while X-H2 provides a wider 8K source without extra portrait-crop height. Choose GH7 for supported 4K slow motion or compatible MFT lenses. Choose X-H2 for the wider 8K canvas, higher-resolution ordinary stills or existing X lenses. Both are body-only. X-H2 ProRes uses only CFexpress Type B and cannot be duplicated to SD. GH7 ProRes above Full HD also cannot be copied to SD, and its proxy mode prevents card backup.

Before you choose

The reasoning and the trade-offs

8K helps across the stage, not above the portrait crop

At a school performance, a wide recording may need a closer horizontal edit for one child and a portrait clip for relatives. X-H2’s 7680×4320 source leaves twice the width of a 3840-pixel final frame, while GH7’s 5760×4320 source leaves one and a half times that width. Fujifilm therefore gives more horizontal reframing room before enlargement. A centered 9:16 crop from either source is 2430×4320, so the 8K label adds no extra height for that particular portrait edit. Both modes stop around 30p. Lens framing, focus and motion still decide whether the crop looks good. Choose 8K for the extra sideways room you will actually use, not because every kind of edit benefits equally.

What this is based on

7680/3840=2,5760/3840=1.5,4320×9/16=2430. Assumes no additional crop, same final pixel target, no sharpness equivalence.

About this comparison

GH7 vs X-H2 for family performances, slow-motion sport and two edits from one take. Compare useful crop room, card backups and the work on the computer.

Both are substantial stabilized hybrid bodies with CFexpress Type B, SD and internal ProRes options. A buyer photographing family events and making edited films can realistically weigh motion capture against still and widescreen resolution.

What matters in practice

The differences that matter

How we reached this conclusion

7680/3840=2,5760/3840=1.5,4320×9/16=2430. Assumes no additional crop, same final pixel target, no sharpness equivalence.

Slow motion can force a resolution decision before the event starts

A pet jumping or a child landing a trick may look better slowed down in the final film. GH7’s ordinary 119.88p 4K footage can be played at 29.97p for quarter-speed motion while keeping a 4K source. X-H2’s high-speed options above its ordinary 4K limit use Full HD. Those clips can still be useful, but a 4K timeline will enlarge them. If most output is a small phone video, that compromise may be acceptable and Fujifilm’s larger still files may matter more. If the promised output is a 4K family film with detailed slow motion, GH7 answers a more specific need. Exposure, suitable media and exact mode limits still need planning.

How we reached this conclusion

119.88/29.97=4. X-H2 official 4K maximum 59.94p and higher-rate FHD modes. No measured sharpness, AF or light requirement ranking.

An editing shortcut can remove the copy you expected to have

Both cameras accept CFexpress Type B and SD, but neither duplicates its high-resolution ProRes take to the SD card. GH7 also disables card Backup when proxy recording is enabled. X-H2 cannot create an internal proxy at 8K29.97/25p. For someone editing family films on a modest computer, those restrictions affect both the recording setup and the evening afterward. Decide whether you need lighter editing files, two eligible capture-stage copies or the selected high-resolution format, then test the actual combination. A proxy is also not an equivalent archive of the original recording. Budget time and storage for a verified separate copy instead of assuming two slots and proxy support cover everything together.

How we reached this conclusion

Both ProRes destination restrictions, GH7 proxy/Backup exclusion and X-H2 exact 8K proxy limits. No claimed computer benchmark.

What you give up

Every choice has a cost

If you choose Panasonic LUMIX GH7 body

  • Both offers exclude lenses. Include suitable media and a supported editor. Optional DMS1 audio requires current firmware and specific MOV/ProRes settings.

If you choose Fujifilm X-H2 body

  • Check the actual computer with 8K files before buying. Include a CFexpress Type B reader if needed and plan an independent copy of ProRes footage.

Recommendation switch

The decision flips if...

4K slow motion or existing MFT lenses lead

Choose Panasonic LUMIX GH7 body. GH7 fits that specific recording and lens plan.

Wide reframing, still crops or X lenses lead

Choose Fujifilm X-H2 body. X-H2 supplies those advantages with an editing plan checked.

What matters in practice

Before you choose

You want room to choose the framing later, but also want slow action that still belongs in a 4K film and a sensible backup routine.

Check these before buying

  • Both offers exclude lenses.
  • ProRes does not get a simultaneous SD copy.
  • Check exact proxy restrictions.
  • Test the computer with the chosen format.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • No measured autofocus, low-light or image-quality comparison.
  • Pixel counts establish crop room rather than guaranteed usable detail.
