Main trade-off
OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mark II body
Movies use one selected card.120fps fixes focus and faster tracking modes require supported lenses.
Head-to-head
OM-1 II can retain a longer configured pre-shutter window, while R7 can duplicate eligible movies. Choose OM for its supported pre-capture setup or existing Micro Four Thirds lenses. Choose R7 for compatible Canon crop lenses, larger ordinary still files and supported movie duplication. Both offers are body-only. OM movies use one card. R7 RAW burst saves a roll that needs extraction or Digital Photo Professional, and special modes have backup restrictions.
Before you choose
A dog’s jump or a bird’s takeoff may begin before you fully press the shutter. At 20fps and the maximum 99-frame setting, OM-1 II has a nominal 4.95-second pre-shutter window. R7’s RAW burst retains up to approximately 0.5 seconds and saves 6960×4640 frames in a single roll. Those Canon frames need extraction or Digital Photo Professional before the usual sharing workflow. Neither mode guarantees the desired frame is sharp, and electronic shutter can distort movement. Choose the combination of lead-in, lens support and file handling you will actually use, rather than treating the highest burst rate as the whole answer.
What this is based on
99/20=4.95 seconds at selected nominal rate. Canon explicit 0.5s and RAW-roll workflow. Maximum configured buffers assumed, no AF hit-rate claim.

Main trade-off
RAW burst uses a single roll, needs extraction and has electronic-shutter and mode restrictions. Do not assume it has ordinary-mode backup behavior.

OM-1 Mark II vs Canon R7 for pets, sport and family events. Compare pre-capture timing, RAW-burst extraction, movie copies and the lenses you already own.
Both are stabilized enthusiast action bodies with two SD slots and strong lens-system followings. Buyers can reasonably cross-shop them for outdoor animals, youth sport and family-event duties.
Winner by situation
OM can retain a longer nominal lead-in at the selected rate, subject to lens and mode limits.
Canon supports the specified duplicate mode.
R7 accepts RF-S and qualified adapted EF-S.
OM stays in that lens system.

Both bodies can duplicate supported stills, but OM-1 II records movies to just one selected card. R7 offers Rec.to multiple in supported movie settings. If the family expects both still photographs and a speech recording, that makes Canon’s duplication option a meaningful advantage. Check the exact recording mode and card state beforehand. R7’s RAW burst and other special modes should not inherit an ordinary-mode backup promise. On OM, Dual Same 5 stops when either card fills. Dual Same 6 continues on the remaining card, with duplication no longer happening. After the event, make and verify an off-camera copy whichever body you bought.
Manufacturer card-destination and special-mode restrictions. No promise of duplication across every format or protection against camera loss.
Only 13g separates the bodies with battery and card. For a parent standing beside a sports field, the lens that gives the needed framing can matter much more. R7 keeps compatible RF-S lenses and qualified EF-S lenses through a separate adapter. OM uses Micro Four Thirds instead. A nominal 100mm focal length frames roughly like 160mm on Canon APS-C and 200mm on OM before other crops, but that does not prove equal lens size, aperture or image quality. Compare the actual complete setups and existing lenses. Switching systems to save 13g would be a weak reason if it means replacing a useful telephoto lens.
612-599=13g,100×1.6=160 and 100×2=200 framing illustration. No exposure or full-kit-weight equivalence, exact compatibility still required.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mark II body | Canon EOS R7 body | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-shutter option | Up to 99 frames, rate-dependent | Up to approximately 0.5 seconds | Window duration and file workflow should be compared together. |
| RAW-burst workflow | Configured Pro Capture modes | 6960×4640 frames in a CR3 roll | Canon’s selected frame must be extracted or read in supported software. |
| Movie card destination | One selected slot | Supported Rec.to multiple | Two physical slots do not imply identical movie protection. |
| Body with battery/card | 599g | 612g | A 13g body gap should not drive a lens-system switch. |
| Lens mount and framing factor | Micro Four Thirds,2x | RF/RF-S,1.6x | Actual lens coverage and adapters change the complete purchase. |
