Main trade-off
Canon EOS R7 body
Body only and 612g before the lens. Auto-switch is not backup, and movie auto-switch still stops the take when a card fills.
Head-to-head
R7 duplicates the capture in supported modes, while X-S20 makes two orientations easier. Choose R7 when a second card copy during the event or keeping Canon lenses is essential. Choose X-S20 when one 6.2K 3:2 take needs both a television edit and a vertical clip, and you accept a single-card workflow. Both links are body-only. Canon duplication needs the correct mode and space on both cards. Fuji’s taller mode stops at about 30fps, and its optional fan is separate.
Before you choose
R7 can duplicate a supported recording onto two cards, which helps when the event itself cannot be repeated. X-S20’s taller 6.2K source helps make two differently shaped edits afterward, but those edits still depend on the same captured file on one card. If losing that original would be the larger problem, prioritize R7’s supported duplication and make a separate backup afterward. If reframing is the main difficulty, Fuji can help provided you handle its single-card files carefully. On Canon, confirm the selected mode supports duplication and that both cards have room. Two inserted cards alone do not establish protection.
What this is based on
Canon eligible duplicate recording versus Fujifilm one slot and 6.2K 3:2. Distinguishes capture redundancy from multiple exports. No guarantee against every type of data loss.

R7 vs X-S20 for family ceremonies, sport and edited clips. Compare immediate card copies, tall 6.2K video and the carry cost of the complete lens setup.
Both are stabilized APS-C hybrid bodies with monitored audio and enough still and video capability for an enthusiast’s main camera. They offer different answers when the event cannot be repeated but the final outputs and backup needs differ.
Winner by situation
R7 has configurable dual-card duplication.
X-S20’s taller source leaves more portrait crop room.
R7 keeps that Canon lens path.
X-S20 saves 121g on the same measurement basis.

With a child moving across a stage, turning the camera vertically mid-performance can lose the wider scene. X-S20’s 6.2K 3:2 file allows a later 9:16 crop of about 2340×4160 before processing, while a 4K 16:9 file yields about 1215×2160. That leaves more room to move the portrait crop within the Fuji frame. It cannot recover someone who moved outside the recorded view, so compose for both uses from the start. Canon’s 4K source can still make a 1080p portrait crop in principle. Fuji earns the choice when extra reframing room is repeatedly useful and the up-to 30fps tall mode suits the event.
4160×9/16=2340 versus 2160×9/16=1215. Exact source dimensions from manufacturers. Geometry before processing, no optical-detail claim or promise of automatic subject tracking in editing.
X-S20 saves 121g at the body, battery and card level. That can be useful on a day out, but an optional fan, different lens or support arrangement changes the total. Its FAN-001 can address a documented cooling need, yet adds no battery capacity, card space or second copy. R7 may be the simpler complete purchase if the Canon lenses you already own cover the outing and immediate duplication matters more. Compare the actual packed setup for a representative day. Neither the lighter body nor the optional fan proves an uninterrupted recording time in a warm room.
612−491=121g, lens and accessories excluded equally. Fujifilm FAN-001 separately purchased. Thermal, energy, storage and redundancy constraints remain independent.

Canon, 5137C002
An important event needs two card copies in a supported mode, with both cards prepared and the duplication setting tested.

Fujifilm, 16781852
A single take needs both horizontal and portrait edits, making 6.2K 3:2 useful at up to 29.97p.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Canon EOS R7 body | Fujifilm X-S20 body | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immediate card copy | Two slots with eligible duplicate recording | One SD slot | R7 can create another copy before you get home. |
| Tall video source | 4K 16:9 internal video | 6.2K 3:2 at 6240×4160 | Fuji leaves more room for a vertical edit from one take. |
| Body with battery/card | 612g | 491g | Fuji saves 121g before the lens and accessories. |
| Optional cooling route | No FAN-001 attachment in this system | Separately purchased FAN-001 | A documented fan route is distinct from a continuous-runtime guarantee. |
| Lens continuity | RF/RF-S and qualified adapted EF/EF-S | Fujifilm X mount | Useful lenses already owned can outweigh body-level differences. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Canon EOS R7 body. R7 addresses that risk or existing investment.
Choose Fujifilm X-S20 body. X-S20 supplies more source room for that editing task.
What matters in practice
You want to protect a one-time recording and make it useful in more than one format, without assuming one feature solves both jobs.
