Best for this need

Choose the outdoor node that belongs to your indoor network

Our pick

TP-Link Deco X50-Outdoor 1-Pack

TP-Link Deco X50-Outdoor 1-Pack

Use Deco X50-Outdoor with Deco, eero Outdoor 7 with eero, or ASUS BD5 Outdoor with AiMesh. If an outdoor wired device also needs a connection, the Deco and ASUS units leave one socket after backhaul. The eero does not.

Why it fits this need

  • Same managed mesh family as the home
  • Outdoor-rated enclosure
Main trade-off
Wired traffic is limited to a 1 Gbps link rate.
Choose eero Outdoor 7 with 30W PoE+ Adapter instead when
Your indoor network uses eero and no extra wired device needs a socket on the outdoor node.
More reasons behind this pick
  • Suitable power and cable sealing
  • Usable backhaul route

Extend Wi-Fi to a patio or garden with the right outdoor mesh node. Compare power, network compatibility and ports left for an outdoor wired device.

What matters in practice

How to choose for this need

The correct mesh family matters more than a newer Wi-Fi number. Then decide whether the outdoor node also needs to connect a wired device.

01

A second Wi-Fi network is not the same as a mesh extension

These products share familiar Wi-Fi standards, but their management systems are different. An ASUS node does not become an eero satellite. Staying within the indoor network family keeps the outdoor node in the same setup and management workflow.

02

A cable can solve the difficult exterior-wall connection

If Ethernet reaches the mounting spot, the node no longer has to relay all traffic wirelessly through the exterior wall. When you cannot run a cable, test the intended outdoor position while checking its connection back to the indoor mesh. An outdoor label does not guarantee that link.

03

Check the spare port before planning a camera

X50-Outdoor and BD5 Outdoor each leave a socket after a wired uplink. Outdoor 7 uses its only socket for that uplink. A spare data port does not mean it supplies PoE power to a camera, so plan the camera power separately.

04

Buy the complete power arrangement

The linked Outdoor 7 offer includes its 30W PoE+ adapter. An adapter-only listing can look like a much cheaper router. For every model, follow the mounting, outdoor cable, sealing and power instructions rather than treating the enclosure rating as the whole installation.

Worked example

One wired uplink, then what?

The outdoor node may need to serve both Wi-Fi clients and one local wired device.

FormulaFree Ethernet sockets = total node sockets − 1 wired uplink

  • Each outdoor node uses Ethernet backhaul.
  • No external outdoor switch is included.
  • A separate power source is provided for any downstream device that needs it.
One wired uplink, then what?
ScenarioPorts on the nodeFree after uplinkMesh family
Deco X50-Outdoor2 × 1G1 × 1GDeco
eero Outdoor 71 × 2.5GNoneeero
ASUS BD5 Outdoor2 × 2.5G1 × 2.5GASUS AiMesh

What that meansMatch the family first. Among compatible options, count the ports and plan the power before paying for a higher wireless generation.

Keep in mindLink rates do not predict wireless speed at the far end of the garden.

Check these before buying

  • Confirm the indoor mesh family and outdoor unit model before purchase.
  • Check that the eero package includes the node, not only the power adapter.
  • Test the actual mounting location before making the cable route permanent.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • Manufacturer area claims are not converted into a garden coverage guarantee.
  • IP65 or IP66 does not imply immersion protection, lightning immunity or permission to use indoor cable outside.
