Main trade-off
Epson Home Cinema LS11000
Its 4K image uses pixel shifting rather than native 4K panels.
Head-to-head
Choose LS11000 for motorized lens memories, a longer mounting distance or 4K120 input. Choose XW5000ES if native 4K panels are your priority and its manual lens fits a fixed installation. At a 20-foot lens distance, Epson can make a 120-inch 16:9 picture within its optical range. Sony cannot.
Before you choose
A 120-inch 16:9 image is about 104.59 inches wide. From 20 feet, the required throw ratio is about 2.295. That fits Epson's range and exceeds Sony's 2.21 maximum, so Sony would need to move closer or make a larger picture.
What this is based on
Width = 120 × 16 / √337 = 104.589 in. Required throw = 240 / 104.589 = 2.295. Epson covers 1.35 to 2.84. Sony covers 1.38 to 2.21. No keystone or digital reduction is included.
Main trade-off

Main trade-off
Focus, zoom and lens shift are manual, with no matching motorized lens-memory workflow.

Epson LS11000 vs Sony XW5000ES for a 120-inch theater, rear-shelf placement, motorized lens settings and 4K120 gaming. Work out which fits before buying.

Winner by situation
The required 2.295 throw ratio fits Epson but exceeds Sony's 2.21 maximum.
Epson has motorized optics and ten lens memories. Sony requires manual lens adjustment.
Epson accepts 4K120. Sony's 120 Hz option is at 1080p.
Sony uses native 3840 × 2160 panels. Epson creates its 4K output through pixel shifting.
Both are intended to work with external sources and audio equipment.
What matters in practice
A 120-inch 16:9 image is about 104.59 inches wide. From 20 feet, the required throw ratio is about 2.295. That fits Epson's range and exceeds Sony's 2.21 maximum, so Sony would need to move closer or make a larger picture.
Width = 120 × 16 / √337 = 104.589 in. Required throw = 240 / 104.589 = 2.295. Epson covers 1.35 to 2.84. Sony covers 1.38 to 2.21. No keystone or digital reduction is included.
For the same 120-inch image, Sony's farthest optical position is about 19.26 feet. A lens currently 20 feet away would need to move roughly 8.9 inches toward the screen. Check the mount and cabling before treating that as a small change.
Sony maximum distance = 104.589 × 2.21 / 12 = 19.2618 ft. 20 - 19.2618 = 0.7382 ft, or 8.86 in. A practical installation needs tolerance rather than relying on the exact endpoint.
Epson can accept the 4K120 signal that Sony cannot at 4K resolution. An older receiver, cable or source setting can still cap the system at 60 Hz. Sony's 1080p120 mode does not meet a requirement to keep both 4K and 120 Hz.
Epson documents 48 Gbps HDMI and 4K120. Sony lists 4K60 and 1080p120 modes. The combined requirement is resolution of 3840 × 2160 at 120 Hz across every device in the path.
Try your real numbers
The result checks hard limits only. Preferences stay out of the calculation.
For a 120-inch 16:9 picture, the calculated lens range is about 11.77 to 24.75 ft. Your input is 9.50 ft.
For a 120-inch 16:9 picture, the calculated lens range is about 12.03 to 19.26 ft. Your input is 9.50 ft. Optical estimate only: use Sony’s exact 16:9 distance formula and lens-shift diagram for mounting. Its formula includes offsets absent from rounded throw ratios. Check body/cables and ventilation. Digital correction adds no optical range.
Distance is measured from the lens to the screen. The calculation uses a 16:9 image and the verified optical throw range for each exact model.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Epson Home Cinema LS11000 | Sony VPL-XW5000ES | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optical throw range | 1.35 to 2.84:1 | 1.38 to 2.21:1 | Epson can sit farther back for the same image width. Distance is measured from the lens. |
| 120-inch 16:9 lens distance | About 11.77 to 24.75 ft | About 12.03 to 19.26 ft | These calculated ranges narrow the mounting options before image preferences enter the decision. |
| Lens operation | Motorized zoom, focus and shift | Manual zoom, focus and shift | Epson lets you adjust the lens without physically reaching the projector. |
| Lens memory | 10 stored positions | No equivalent motorized position memory | Epson can recall optical settings when changing image formats. Confirm the screen and installation plan. |
| 4K input rate | Up to 120 Hz | Up to 60 Hz | Sony also accepts 1080p120, which is a different resolution from 4K120. |
| Imaging method | Three-chip 3LCD with pixel-shifted 4K output | Native 3840 × 2160 SXRD panels | Native panel resolution is a design distinction, not a measured sharpness or contrast verdict. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Epson Home Cinema LS11000. Epson covers the required throw ratio. Sony does not at its optical minimum picture size from that position.
Choose Sony VPL-XW5000ES. Sony meets that panel and installation preference.
Choose neither. Both depend on additional source and audio equipment.
What matters in practice
A rear shelf can make the lens range more important than the panel specification. Use the distance from the lens, not from the wall behind the projector. The 20-foot example also assumes a 120-inch 16:9 image. Change the size or aspect ratio and the calculation must change with it.
On a high ceiling mount, manual adjustment means reaching the projector whenever focus, zoom or lens shift needs changing. Epson can handle those tasks from the remote and store positions. If Sony will be set once for a fixed screen, the manual lens may be a reasonable compromise.
Sony's native 4K panels satisfy a clear hardware preference. That fact alone does not establish better contrast, HDR tone mapping or perceived detail in your room. Compare demonstrations where possible, and keep the screen, light control and audio budget in the buying decision.
