Main trade-off
Ten programs add controls that occasional smoothie makers may never use.
Main trade-off
The 48-ounce jar can require two rounds for a family-size recipe.

Ten recipe programs against five on the same 48-ounce Ascent platform.
The practical choice turns on programs and special cycles, then on the constraints in your own setup.
Before you choose
X5 provides named cycles for jobs such as non-dairy milk, nut butter and spice grinding. That can give another household member a clearer starting button than reproducing a manual recipe on X4. Choose X5 if those preparations are frequent and the recipe fits its instructions. For smoothies, soup, frozen cocktails and dips, X4 already supplies the relevant core shortcuts and the same stated jar size.
The program lists establish different automation choices, while both also permit manual control. A missing X4 preset does not establish that the food cannot be made or that an X5 result tastes better.
For thick smoothie bowls or spreads, both models may ask the operator to use the supplied tamper. X5's extra presets therefore should not be treated as a promise of hands-off thick blending. Both have a tamper indicator and a button to extend a program by fifteen seconds. Choose X5 for its additional recipe shortcuts, while X4 retains the same documented assistance when a mixture needs intervention.
The current official pages list a tamper indicator, supplied tamper and fifteen-second extension on both. These features acknowledge possible intervention without establishing that every recipe needs it or predicting blend duration.
Winner by situation
Blade shape, torque and a dedicated cycle can turn cubes into even crushed ice without long stalls.
A tamper or powered ingredient pusher keeps dense, low-liquid blends moving toward the blade.
A responsive variable dial lets the cook build a vortex and stop at the texture they want.
For programs, Vitamix Ascent X5 records “10” and Vitamix Ascent X4 records “5”. For programs, this changes how many steps the user handles and how much of the routine is automated.
Both records list “48 ounces” for container. Both records show the same result for “Container”, so this row does not separate them.

Vitamix, Brushed Stainless, 48-ounce container
