Main trade-off
Sonos Ace
TV Audio Swap depends on compatible Sonos soundbar hardware and setup.
Head-to-head
Choose Sonos Ace if you own a compatible Sonos soundbar and want TV Audio Swap. Choose AirPods Max 2 for supported Apple-device features. Without either ecosystem benefit, compare the lighter Ace and its longer standard playback claim first.
Before you choose
The published difference is 74.2 g.
What this is based on
(386.2 − 312) ÷ 386.2 × 100 = 19.2%.
Main trade-off
TV Audio Swap depends on compatible Sonos soundbar hardware and setup.
Main trade-off
It does not reduce the 386.2 g weight of the previous USB-C model.

Choose Sonos Ace or AirPods Max 2 by the TV and devices you already own, then compare weight, battery claims, USB audio and the required cable setup.
Winner by situation
Ace can use TV Audio Swap after the compatible setup is confirmed.
The supported Apple features may be more useful than a Sonos-specific TV workflow.
Ace provides ordinary two-device multipoint. Apple automatic switching is ecosystem-specific.
Both have USB audio. The TV ecosystem features do not need to determine a desk-only purchase.
What matters in practice
The published difference is 74.2 g.
(386.2 − 312) ÷ 386.2 × 100 = 19.2%.
Ace’s 30-hour claim is ten hours above the Max 2’s 20-hour claim.
(30 − 20) ÷ 20 × 100 = 50%. This is arithmetic on manufacturer claims, not a measured result.
Ace’s TV Audio Swap requires a compatible Sonos soundbar, while the Apple feature case depends on supported Apple devices.
Neither headphone alone creates the other hardware required by its ecosystem feature. No fixed dollar cost is assumed.
Check your own setup
Start with the way you listen. USB charging is not the same as USB audio, and some headphones need power even with a cable. These choices are examples until you apply yours.
Bluetooth listening.
Bluetooth listening.
Battery figures are manufacturer claims for the stated mode, not measured travel time. Volume, codec, calls and battery age change runtime. Closed earcups can still leak sound. Weight alone does not predict comfort. USB audio needs a compatible source and cable. This check does not assess sound quality, microphone quality or amplifier power.

Sonos, Ace
Most useful if you already own a compatible Sonos soundbar and want to move its TV audio to headphones. It also works over ordinary Bluetooth, USB-C or its supplied analog-source cable.

Apple, AirPods Max 2
The reason to choose Max 2 is the H2 feature set, including Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness on supported devices. Weight and the advertised 20-hour ANC runtime are unchanged from the USB-C first generation.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Sonos Ace | Apple AirPods Max 2 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | 312 g | 386.2 g | Sonos is 74.2 g lighter. |
| Standard ANC playback | Up to 30 hours | Up to 20 hours | Sonos has ten more stated hours, with different test conditions. |
| TV-specific benefit | TV Audio Swap with compatible Sonos soundbar | Compatible Apple TV and Apple-device features | Your existing hardware determines which advantage is usable. |
| Device switching | Two-device Bluetooth multipoint | Apple automatic switching with compatible setup | Generic multipoint and Apple switching are not the same feature. |
| USB audio | Supported | Supported | Both can use a compatible digital USB source. |
| Analog-source cable | Specific Sonos USB-C-to-3.5 mm cable included | Compatible optional USB-C-to-3.5 mm cable | Check the actual cable and source rather than buying a generic adapter. |
| Inward folding | No | No | Both turn flat, so check the case against your travel bag. |
What you give up
What matters in practice
Do you already have a compatible Sonos soundbar, or do you mainly watch through Apple TV and Apple devices? That question is more useful than comparing ecosystem logos. Do not buy a soundbar-dependent headphone feature and discover afterward that the television setup cannot use it.
Ace can connect to ordinary Bluetooth sources without a Sonos soundbar. TV Audio Swap is an additional supported workflow, not a requirement for normal phone listening. Check multipoint in the app because its setup is separate from TV use.
Sonos explicitly requires its compatible analog-source cable and does not support arbitrary third-party USB-C-to-3.5 mm cables. The Apple analog-source path also needs the compatible cable. The shape of a USB-C plug does not establish compatibility.
