Head-to-head

Garmin STRIKER 4 vs STRIKER Vivid 7cv: Vivid adds contours and ClearVu, neither accepts detailed navigation charts

The short answer

Choose STRIKER 4 for a compact, dedicated traditional-sonar display with GPS waypoints. Choose Vivid 7cv for ClearVu, a larger screen and Quickdraw contours. Neither accepts detailed navigation charts, so a bigger STRIKER does not become an ECHOMAP chartplotter.

Before you choose

The reasoning and the trade-offs

A narrow mount can rule out the larger display

Vivid 7cv is 14.4 cm wider at the head unit before mount and cable clearance.

What this is based on

23.5 cm minus 9.1 cm equals 14.4 cm. The comparison excludes brackets and installation space.

Main trade-off

Garmin STRIKER 4

The small screen provides less viewing area.

Main trade-off

What matters in practice

The differences that matter

A narrow mount can rule out the larger display

Vivid 7cv is 14.4 cm wider at the head unit before mount and cable clearance.

How we reached this conclusion

23.5 cm minus 9.1 cm equals 14.4 cm. The comparison excludes brackets and installation space.

Returning to a saved point is different from mapping the area

Both can save GPS positions. Vivid 7cv also creates Quickdraw depth contours while surveying.

How we reached this conclusion

The original STRIKER 4 provides waypoint navigation without Quickdraw generation.

ClearVu does not unlock navigation charts

Vivid 7cv adds structure imaging, but both remain outside the detailed-chart system.

How we reached this conclusion

Garmin explicitly excludes supplemental detailed charts on STRIKER hardware.

Recommendation switch

The decision flips if...

I need the smaller dedicated display and waypoint navigation

Choose Garmin STRIKER 4. STRIKER 4 covers the compact setup.

I want ClearVu and my own depth contours

Choose Garmin STRIKER Vivid 7cv. The Vivid 7cv bundle adds both capabilities.

I need detailed navigation charts on the device

Choose neither. Move to a chart-compatible product family.

What matters in practice

How to make the call

01

A narrow mount can rule out the larger display

On a narrow kayak rail or console, first mark the actual head-unit width and the cable path. STRIKER 4 can fit a smaller display position. Vivid 7cv gives a larger viewing surface but needs room around the controls and mount. Neither display dimension establishes better visibility under your exact sunlight and viewing angle.

02

Returning to a saved point is different from mapping the area

Choose Vivid 7cv if you want to build a local contour map during repeated passes over the same water. STRIKER 4 suits marking a productive spot and finding it again. A saved coordinate does not describe the surrounding depth changes, and a self-recorded contour map only covers the areas you have surveyed.

03

ClearVu does not unlock navigation charts

If the real reason to upgrade is seeing structure below the boat, Vivid 7cv with its GT20-TM is relevant. If the job is loading detailed regional navigation charts, choose another product family. Purchasing a chart through ActiveCaptain does not make it installable on either STRIKER. Confirm the water coverage and chart-compatible hardware before paying.

Check these before buying

  • Measure the mount, head unit and rear cable clearance together.
  • Confirm GT20-TM is included in the selected US Vivid 7cv package.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • No side-by-side sonar, sunlight-readability or fish-detection test was performed. Self-created contours are not a substitute for appropriate navigation information.
