Kobo Clara BW N365
Monochrome cannot preserve a chart legend that relies only on different colors. Check a real sample if that is central to your reading.
Head-to-head
Choose Clara BW for a mainly text-based library when its current offer is the better buy. Both are six-inch, 174 g readers, and Clara Colour adds color without adding pen support or page area. Clara Colour earns its place when colored diagrams or highlight categories matter inside the book. Check export permissions first if those highlights are meant for a class or book club.
Before you choose
A reader who marks one color for passages to discuss and another for questions has a reason to prefer Clara Colour. The distinction is visible while returning to the book. If the plan is to send notes to the group, check the book’s export rules before choosing hardware. Kobo permits typed-note and highlight export from eligible Kobo purchases and Kobo Plus titles, with publisher approval. That permission gate applies to both Claras. Neither supports Stylus 2, so a color highlighter should not be confused with handwritten margin notes. Clara BW remains a reasonable choice when the group only needs typed quotations or when the books being read cannot use the intended export route.
What this is based on
Color-coded personal reading crossed with a later shared discussion and book-specific export permissions. The practical value depends on use inside the book and permitted output, not an invented learning benefit.

Main trade-off
Color does not add pen support or a larger page. Small fixed-layout material may still require zooming on six inches.
Compare Clara BW and Clara Colour for novels, book-club notes and illustrated pages. Check what color adds, what can be shared and why battery claims need care.
These two Kobos have the same documented body dimensions, storage and device weight. Buyers choosing a compact reader face a direct monochrome-versus-color decision. The useful distinction is what the color content is used for and whether the finished notes must leave the reader.
Winner by situation
Start with BW’s offer. Both keep the same compact size and shared features.
Colour preserves those categories. Export still depends on the book and publisher.
Neither Clara supports Stylus 2.
Color does not enlarge the page. Try the document on a larger screen.

Both selected Black models weigh 174 g and measure 112 by 160 by 9.2 mm. Clara Colour therefore preserves the compact carrying format. Yet its page is still six inches, and color detail uses 150 ppi rather than the 300 ppi monochrome figure. A textbook diagram whose labels are already too small on a six-inch reader does not become comfortably readable just because its categories regain their colors. Try a representative fixed-layout page at the size you intend to use. Choose Colour when the color distinction solves the confusion and the page is large enough. Consider a larger screen when the real obstacle is the label size. No measured contrast advantage or readable-font threshold is assumed here.
Small-bag commuting crossed with fixed-layout color reference material. Equal physical dimensions establish no carrying-size penalty, while equal diagonal and separate color density limit the display claim.
If charging is easy to forget during a busy week, battery claims deserve checking. Kobo’s published Clara BW and Black Clara Colour estimates use different front-light brightness assumptions. Subtracting their advertised days would mix the display change with a different test setting. It would not tell you how much runtime your own reading loses by choosing color. The newer White Colour also has a different listed battery capacity, so its figures should not be substituted into this Black offer. Compare actual use, charging access and the current manufacturer conditions. This page does not invent a percentage endurance penalty to make the choice look more precise.
Irregular charging routine crossed with non-equivalent manufacturer battery tests and exact color variant. Rejects a tempting but invalid derived runtime comparison.
